Taking good care of your jewellery is important. We want you to take absolute care of your jewellery.
The following are general tips to take care of all types of jewellery:
- Do not spray your jewellery with beauty products such as hair spray, mists, cosmetics or perfume as this can tarnish and discolour the jewellery.
- It is advisable to remove your jewellery when doing jobs or chores where it can get damaged or broken. For example, removing jewellery before gardening, cleaning your bathtub, or washing dishes will help to prevent damage to your jewellery.
- Any kind of heat, hot water, or solvents should be avoided as this can affect the jewellery settings and findings, particularly when a jewellery adhesive has been used.
- Avoid wearing too many necklaces or chains at the same time or keeping loose chains in bags where they can become tangled or scratched.
- Follow a regular jewellery cleaning routine as this will help in keeping your jewellery new and lusterous for a long time. See our ‘Cleaning Your Jewellery’ section for information on how to clean your jewellery.
Sterling silver items should be stored in a dark area and protected from prolonged exposure to air. Avoid those damp, humid places because they may quickly cause tarnishing.
We recommend keeping your sterling silver jewellery in a protective bag/pouch made of soft cloth, a lined box or even wrapped in tissue or cotton. Storing your jewellery in an airtight container will keep the lustre and shine for ages.
Each piece of jewellery should be stored individually wrapped or in a separate compartment to prevent scratching as a result of pieces rubbing together. Extra care should be taken for gemstone jewellery to prevent harder gemstones from scratching the surface of the metal setting.
Using an appropriate lined box is ideal as it will keep the jewellery flat and each piece separate. Fashion and Jewels provide all their Sterling Silver Jewellery range in a sturdy and superior quality lined box which will keep your jewellery well protected, new and shining for ages.
Natural exfoliated skin, body oils, and dust can build up on your jewellery. But it is very easy to clean it.
Generally, a mild soap in lukewarm water is enough to clean it. Using a very soft toothbrush to gently clean the surfaces of the gemstones will revive the looks of your jewellery.
Jewellery should always be pat dried. Do not use tissue to polish your jewellery as tiny hard fibres from the tissue will scratch the surface.
A jewellery cleaning solution/wipe/cloth can also be used. For removing scratches, use a good jeweller\'s rouge/scratch remover.
For gemstone jewellery, it is advisable to check what is safe for cleaning that gemstone. Some cleaners which are good for sterling silver/gold/platinum may be too harsh for the gemstone.
Ultrasonic cleaners are not recommended. They can damage pearls and gem-set jewellery.
